The Cost of Forgiveness
"In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." — Hebrews 9:22
Forgiveness is not cheap. Hebrews 9:22 reminds us that, according to God’s law, sin cannot be washed away by mere words or ritual. It demands a cost—a life. From the beginning, when God clothed Adam and Eve with animal skins, to the sacrifices under the Mosaic law, blood was always the sign of atonement.
But all those sacrifices pointed forward to one ultimate sacrifice: the blood of Jesus Christ. His death fulfills the requirement fully and finally. His blood was not like that of bulls or goats—it was divine, perfect, and powerful enough to cleanse sin completely.
This truth sobers us, but it also frees us. Our forgiveness was bought at the highest price, not so we would live in guilt, but in gratitude and reverence. When we grasp what it cost God to forgive us, we are moved not only to worship but to live in holiness.
