Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” — Genesis 4:9
Cain had just committed the first murder in human history, and God—knowing exactly what had happened—asked him, “Where is your brother Abel?” It’s a question filled with divine sorrow, not ignorance. Like with Adam and Eve, God gives Cain a chance to come clean. But instead of confessing, Cain deflects with a lie and a cold-hearted question of his own: “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
This moment reveals much about the human heart. Sin hardens us—not just against God, but against each other. Cain was not only guilty of violence, he was guilty of indifference. And God’s question echoes down to us: Where is your brother? Where is your sister?
In a world fractured by selfishness, violence, and pride, God calls His people to care. We are our brother’s keeper. We are called to love, to speak truth, to protect, to forgive. Indifference is not an option in the kingdom of God.
Are you living with a heart that is aware of others? Or are you avoiding responsibility, like Cain?
Prayer Points:
Lord, soften my heart toward others and make me aware of their needs.
Forgive me for times I’ve responded to others with indifference or pride.
Help me love and care for others as You have loved and cared for me.
